Shin Kong Financial Holding Ranks Second in DJSI Global Insurance Industry
The latest rating result of the world's most representative and credible Dow Jones Sustainability Indices(DJSI) was announced on December 8. Shin Kong Financial Holding(SKFH) was selected as a “DJSI World” constituent for three consecutive years with its continuous improvement in sustainable practices, and ranked second and first in the insurance industry in the world and Asia respectively. SKFH was also selected as a “DJSI Emerging Markets” constituent. Being recognized on both lists in this year fully demonstrates SKFH’s fruitful achievements in sustainable development.
DJSI is the world's first index evaluating companies' ESG performance, and only the top 10% of the world's top 3,600 companies from 61 industries with ESG performance in each industry can be included as constituent. The depth and breadth of the evaluation criteria are becoming increasingly rigorous every year. In the 2023 evaluation, SKFH ranked second in the global insurance industry only to Poste Italiane S.p.A. Among the three aspects of environment(E), social(S), and governance(G), SKFH performed most prominently in “governance aspects” and “social aspects”, ranking 2% in the global insurance industry. In addition, SKFH ranked first globally in five of 20 question groups, including “Business Ethics”, “Policy Influence”, “Human rights”, “Customer Relationship Management”, and “Reporting Transparency”, and ranked 10% in 17 question groups. Such excellent performance not only shows SKFH’s completeness in planning sustainable strategy but also reflects its achievements in strengthening corporate governance, paying attention to human rights, responding to the needs of stakeholders, and exerting financial influence, as well as its great progress in managing climate risks as well as cultivating climate resilience and adaptability.
Stephen Chen, CEO of SKFH, said that in order to continue to deepen ESG and integrate it into daily operations, the company has upgraded the "Corporate Sustainability Committee" to a functional committee at the board of directors level, setting carbon reduction targets based on science and short, medium, and long-term policies in all aspects of ESG as well as regularly tracking achievements. Regarding issues such as net-zero emissions in 2050 and DEI (Diversity, Equality and Inclusion) that are of global concern, SKFH has formulated proactive strategies and action plans, and works with its subsidiaries to exert its core financial competencies to make ESG and business go hand in hand. For example, in terms of operations, we continue to introduce ISO energy management systems in accordance with international standards, conduct greenhouse gas inventories, and build green buildings. In terms of investment and financing business, we improve the ESG decision-making process, actively negotiate with investment and financing partners to strengthen climate management, and assist customers to ESG indicators are included in stock selection considerations to balance sustainability and investment profits. In terms of implementing financial inclusion, Shin Kong also continues to pay attention to the elderly and disadvantaged groups, builds employee empathy through education and training, and is committed to creating a friendly financial environment and improving financial services tolerance.
SKFH makes unremitting efforts on the road to sustainability. In addition to the great performance in DJSI, it earned recognition of leadership level in climate change questionnaire of CDP, which is an international authoritative organization. In 2023, SKFH won awards including Bloomberg Gender Equality Index, Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility, Taiwan Sustainable Investment Award(Taiwan SIA), Taiwan Sustainable Action Award(TSAA), Taiwan Top 100 Sustainability Model Enterprise Award, and Global Corporate Sustainability Award(GCSA). Its subsidiary Shin Kong Life(SKL) also won five awards in the Financial Supervisory Commission’s insurance competition, including treating customers fairly and micro-insurance, etc. Shin Kong Bank(SKB) was selected as Asia's Best Employer Award of "HR ASIA Magazine" for two consecutive years, fulfilling Shin Kong's commitment to customers, employees, the general public and other stakeholders.
